“An experiment based on the ancient and inaccurate assumption that, as we are equal in the eyes of God, we should therefore be equally equal in the eyes of our fellow creatures.”
N. Coward
Marshwood House—Kent, Southeast England, 1955
When from the cozy climes of the Côte d’Azur the Earl of Marshwood declares his intention to marry Hollywood diva Miranda Frayle, tempers rise, spirits plummet and confusion reigns supreme. As Lady Marshwood, the Earl’s mother, struggles to straddle pre- and postwar class distinctions, her butler Crestwell accepts the news of the betrothal with his customarily sanguine aplomb. Her personal maid Moxie, on the other hand, is surprisingly distressed by the announcement, refusing to stay at Marshwood House one second longer if the new Mistress of Marshwood moves in, even if it means deserting her Lady whom she has served unstintingly for 20 years. With the unexpected entrance of Don Lucas, matinee idol and on-again off-again lover of the aforementioned Miranda, the unstable becomes volatile, the unsavoury unbearable, and we are served a comedy cocktail à la Coward—very dry!
